Left Alternative

Left Alternative

The world is extremely unequal with just 1% of humanity consuming 25% of all resources and the richest 0.14% of humanity controling 25% of the world’s assets. A handful of billionaires and large corporations dominate the world while billions of people live in or near to poverty. Capitalism is a system which exploits people and the planet for a benefit of a few. A democratic socialist world would eliminate hunger and poverty, insecurity and alienation. People would be able to live their lives fully, enjoying well-being and the opportunity to develop their full potential.

A Socialist World is Desirable and Possible.

GET INVOLVED:

Left Alternative is a weekly discussion group held at SFU's Burnaby campus to discuss various social, political, economic, and cultural issues of significance to our members - and, we hope - the general members of society. It is dedicated to debating left politics outside the bounds of mass media, everyday cliche, and centrist/centre-right orthodoxy while exploring/pursing common interests. In the past, discussion topics have included the definition of socialism, the state and bureuacracy, colonialism and imperialism, nationalism and socialism, gender and socialism, and problems around the environment and ecology. While it is not possible to discuss these topics in their full depth in the space of one meeting, we frequently have extended discussions probing a number of different left perspectives to try to reach somewhat of a consensus understanding.
